Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes winter babysitter at the abandoned Overlook Hotel in Colorado, acquisitive to cure his writer's block. He settles in forth with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is bedeviled by analytic premonitions. As Jack's autograph goes boilerplate and Danny's visions become added disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel's aphotic secrets and begins to break into a bloodthirsty bedlamite hell-bent on terrorising his family.
